It comprises a base unit, featuring a Filmtools 6″ vacuum suction mount with a 3/8-16 threaded spud, and a Matthews BH-30 Ball Head. While the vacuum cup can support up to 70 pounds, and the Matthews BH-30 ball head has a 40-pound capacity, we recommend a maximum load of 30 pounds for safety. This allows for mounting DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and most film cameras with lenses securely.
The operation of the vacuum cups is based on utilizing atmospheric pressure to create a strong grip. A vacuum forms between the cup and the surface, and Earth’s atmospheric weight holds the cup firmly in place. Unlike typical suction cups that generate a vacuum when pulled away from the surface, these vacuum cups employ a hand-operated pump to efficiently remove air from between the rubber pad and the attaching surface. This method ensures a reliable hold with the entire pad surface making contact, reducing the risk of material distortion.
The vacuum cup’s pump includes a plunger with a red line, serving as a vacuum indicator. This safety feature, introduced by Wood’s Powr-Grip in the 1960s, is highly reliable. A few strokes of the plunger evacuate the vacuum pad, securely sealing it to the surface. When fully attached, the plunger stops moving, concealing the red line within the pump. If the red line becomes visible during use, it signals air leakage into the pad, making the vacuum insufficient.
